Governance

The CMA Welfare Trust (Cheadle Masjid) is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee established to serve the community, advance Islamic education, address community needs and promote cohesion and positive engagement.

As the organisation has grown, so too has the importance of maintaining strong governance, accountability and future leadership. Our structure is therefore designed to ensure the Masjid remains guided by its values, protected for future generations and supported by active and committed Members.

Under the Charity’s Articles of Association:

  • the organisation can have up to 50 Members; and
  • the Charity is governed by a Board of Trustees (up to 15 maximum).

How the Masjid is structured

The Masjid is overseen by a Board of Trustees who are responsible for:

  • governance and strategy;
  • legal and charitable compliance;
  • financial oversight;
  • safeguarding the organisation’s vision and values; and
  • ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Masjid.

Trustees are appointed from a Membership body. Members therefore form an important part of the governance structure and help shape the future direction of the organisation.

The role of Members

Members play an important role in supporting, safeguarding and promoting the work of the Masjid.

Membership is not simply honorary. Members are expected to be active, supportive and engaged individuals who contribute positively to the organisation and wider community.

The Membership body also helps identify and develop future trustees and leaders for the organisation.

What we look for in Members

We look for individuals who:

  • demonstrate good character, integrity and adab;
  • support the Qur’an and Sunnah and the values of Cheadle Masjid;
  • are positively engaged with the Masjid and community;
  • are willing to volunteer, support and contribute;
  • bring useful professional skills, experience or expertise;
  • can work collaboratively and professionally with others; and
  • may have the potential to support future leadership or governance roles.

We particularly value experience in areas such as:

  • governance and charity leadership;
  • education and youth work;
  • safeguarding;
  • finance and audit;
  • legal and HR;
  • communications and media;
  • project and property management; and
  • organisational leadership.

Member requirements

Members are expected to:

  • uphold the vision and values of Cheadle Masjid;
  • support and promote the work of the Masjid;
  • maintain good conduct, professionalism and integrity;
  • attend the AGM and Members’ meetings;
  • comply with relevant policies and procedures;
  • declare conflicts of interest where relevant; and
  • maintain the required £5 monthly standing order contribution.

How Members are recruited

Potential Members are usually identified through:

  • volunteering and community involvement;
  • active participation in the Masjid;
  • professional expertise and experience; and
  • nomination by existing Members.

All prospective Members go through a structured assessment and selection process. This may include:

  • an application process;
  • discussions with Trustees or senior Members;
  • assessment of suitability and contribution; and
  • consideration of how the individual may support the future needs of the organisation.

Nominating a potential Member

Existing Members may nominate individuals they believe would make a positive contribution to Cheadle Masjid.

Nominees should demonstrate:

  • good character and integrity;
  • regular involvement in the Masjid;
  • alignment with the vision and values of CMA;
  • willingness to contribute and support the organisation; and
  • skills or experience that may benefit the community.

To nominate someone, please email [email protected] and a detailed application form will be provided to you.

Please note that nomination or recommendation does not automatically result in membership, and all candidates are required to complete the formal assessment and selection process.

Not currently a Member and want to nominate?

If you are not currently a Member but believe there is someone within the community who would make an excellent Member and future contributor to the organisation, you are also welcome to submit a recommendation to a Trustee. In your correspondence you should include the name of the individual, details of their involvement in Masjid activities, professional background and a brief summary of why you believe they should become a Member.
